While London had the very first metro in the world (1863), the M1 line was the pioneer on the European continent. It was opened in 1896 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002.

The line runs directly under Andrássy Avenue, connecting Deák Ferenc Square with the City Park. What makes the M1 truly special are its beautiful, historic stations. The walls are decorated with distinctive white and brown tiles, which were specially crafted by the world-famous Zsolnay factory. Together with the elegant iron pillars, they perfectly preserve the atmosphere of the late 19th century.

It is a unique experience to ride the small yellow trains; it feels like a real time machine in the middle of a modern city.

Fun Fact: The stations are located just a few steps below the street level. This was a deliberate design choice to avoid deep digging and to keep the metro easily accessible from the sidewalk.

Whether you prefer the scenic tram line 2 along the Danube, the extensive bus network, or the four metro lines, getting from A to B is easy and affordable.

If you are a student, you are in luck! The student monthly pass is incredibly cheap and offers unlimited travel on almost all vehicles within the city. It is one of the best deals in Europe, making it very easy for students to explore every corner of the capital without breaking the bank. So, once you have your student ID, don’t forget to buy your student pass! It will be your best friend during your stay.

You don’t have to worry about schedules too much during the day either. Most lines are very frequent, with vehicles arriving every 5-10 minutes. If you happen to miss your bus or tram, don’t panic—the next one will be there shortly! However, keep in mind that services run less frequently late at night, so it’s always smart to check the BudapestGO app for real-time updates.

Metro Lines: There are four lines (M1–M4), with the historic M1 being a must-see “time machine”.

Iconic Trams: The 4 and 6 trams run 24/7 along the Grand Boulevard, while tram 2 offers a scenic route along the Danube.

Extensive Bus Network: A vast web of daytime and night buses ensures you can reach any dorm or apartment safely at any hour.

Eco-friendly Bubi Bikes: Perfect for a bit of exercise while sightseeing near landmarks like the Chain Bridge.

Ferry Lines: Your student pass even grants access to certain boat services within the city boundaries.
