If you are looking for an inspiring place to hit the books, the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library (FSZEK) is a must-visit. Located in the heart of the Palace District, the central library is housed in the stunning 19th-century neo-baroque Wenckheim Palace. Even if you aren’t a fan of libraries, the historic reading rooms—with their dark wood paneling, golden decorations, and giant chandeliers—are worth a visit just for the atmosphere.
However, because it is so beautiful and popular, it can get very crowded, especially during exam seasons. If you want a seat in the famous “philosophical hall,” you’ll need to arrive early!
If FSZEK is full, don’t worry! Budapest is a true university city, and almost every university and faculty has its own specialized library. For example, the ELTE University Library or the BME Central Library offer equally quiet and professional environments for students, often with a more modern or classic academic vibe.
Did you know? – The Hidden Ballrooms: The 4th floor of the library contains the original ballrooms of the palace. You can sit in a leather armchair and study in the same room where aristocrats once held grand parties. It’s arguably the most elegant “office” you’ll ever have!
Pro Tip: To enter the historic rooms, you need a reader’s card, but you can get a very cheap “tourist pass” just to look around and take photos!
